Windy Stretch Eases as Orlando Heads Toward a Warm Halloween

Storm clouds building over open country

ORLANDO, Fla. — The blustery weather that has been whipping Orlando and the rest of Central Florida is expected to back off over the next few days, though the beaches will stay rough and dangerous for a while longer.

Gusty northeast winds pushed quick bursts of rain across the region Monday. Forecasters said squalls could bring gusts up to 40 mph, and a wind advisory covered the coast into Monday evening.

Inland, Orlando was looking at steady 20 to 25 mph winds, gusting near 35 mph, while coastal towns could see gusts as high as 45 to 50 mph. The winds were forecast to start calming overnight.

For Tuesday, the best chance of showers slides south, with rain odds of 30% to 40%. After that, rain chances drop to about 10% to 20% for the rest of the week, and widespread heavy rain looks less and less likely.

Temperatures will barely budge. Afternoon highs should sit around 80 degrees each day for the next week, and Halloween looks close to normal or a little warmer as the weekend arrives.

The coast is a different story. Rip currents that can be deadly, breakers of 7 to 11 feet, along with erosion of the sand, are expected to continue, with a High Surf Advisory and a Coastal Flood Warning in place and a gale warning posted for boaters. Morning high tides could bring minor flooding to low-lying roads, parking lots and waterfront properties.

One more change is on the calendar: clocks fall back one hour early Sunday, which means an extra hour of sleep and earlier sunsets heading into November. Anyone headed to the coast this week should check beach flags before getting in the water.
