Houston – The University of Houston Tennis program has announced the addition of Chris Wootton as its new assistant coach, bringing extensive experience and a proven track record to the team. With over three decades of coaching experience and a decade in collegiate tennis, Wootton is expected to play a significant role in enhancing the success of Houston’s tennis athletes.
Head coach Katarina Adamovic highlighted Wootton’s integrity, energy, and experience as central qualities that align with the goals of the program. These attributes, combined with Wootton’s extensive background in coaching both men’s and women’s collegiate tennis, make him an exceptional fit for the role.
Wootton joins the University of Houston after a successful stint at UT Tyler, where he dramatically turned around the women’s program from a six-win season in 2024 to an impressive 18-win season in 2025. Under his guidance, the program saw a rise in performance, leading to the achievement of NCAA All-America status for the top singles player, Muskan Gupta. Furthermore, he led the UT Tyler men’s program to its first Lone Star Conference tournament title, and three student-athletes earned All-America honors during his tenure.
Prior to his time at UT Tyler, Wootton spent four seasons at the University of Missouri, where he held positions as associate head coach and interim head coach. His tenure at Missouri was marked by notable achievements, including a rise in team ranking from No. 36 to over 100 positions higher and securing the school’s first Southeastern Conference victory in four years. He also played a crucial role in developing players who reached a No. 58 ITA doubles ranking and in recruiting program-record classes featuring blue-chip athletes.
Wootton’s coaching journey began at Williams College, where he led the team to capture the 2017 Division III Team National Championship. He has also made significant contributions as an assistant coach at the University of Southern California (USC), where he improved the team’s ITA ranking from No. 52 to No. 11, and coached a doubles team to the NCAA Doubles Semifinals in 2019.
As a former collegiate athlete himself, Wootton played at Mississippi College and the University of Texas at Tyler, where he earned a master’s degree in business administration. Notably, at 39, he became the oldest All-American in NCAA history across all sports. Over the course of his career, Wootton has coached more than 50 NCAA college tennis players and over 20 ATP/WTA touring professionals.
Wootton’s family includes his wife, Robin, and their two daughters, Christiane and Isabel, aged 22 and 19, respectively. The University of Houston Tennis program encourages fans to support the team through the Linking Coogs NIL collective and the Center Court Club.
