News Summary

The UCF women’s golf team kicked off their spring season with a remarkable performance at the PDI Intercollegiate Tournament, finishing tied for fourth place. The event, held at Eagle Creek Golf Course, saw notable individual performances, especially from freshman Mila Jurine and sophomore Pimpisa Sisutham. Though faced with competitive teams, the Knights showed promise for the upcoming tournaments as they strive for a National Championship.

UCF Women’s Golf Team Starts Spring Season on a High Note

Orlando, Florida – The excitement was palpable as the UCF women’s golf team launched into their spring season at the PDI Intercollegiate Tournament on February 3. Fans and players alike gathered at the stunning Eagle Creek Golf Course, which features a challenging 6,392-yard, par 72 layout. With 54 holes to tackle over three exhilarating days, the anticipation for some great golf was in the air!

Team Achievement and Performance

The Knights put on quite a show, finishing the tournament tied for fourth place with an impressive team score of 841 (-23). It’s a new tournament format, previously known as the UCF Challenge, and it’s gaining traction thanks to the partnership with the Player Development Index (PDI). This fresh approach is all about boosting team performance and overall enjoyment of the game.

Of course, tournament play had its hiccups. On Monday, fog rolled in and caused a delay that had players waiting before they could hit the course. But as they say, a little fog never stopped a determined golfer!

Standout Players

Freshman Mila Jurine shone brightly for the Knights, finishing in a stellar tied for 11th place with a score of 209 (-7). Mila didn’t just play well; she showed skill in her final round with a score of 71 (-1) that included three birdies. It’s no surprise to hear that she looks up to professional golfer Nelly Korda, who’s made quite a name for herself in the sport.

Sophomore Pimpisa Sisutham also earned some well-deserved recognition after securing a tied 17th place finish with a final score of 210 (-6). She came through strong with a 69 (-3) in her final round, highlighting her talent.

Another strong competitor was Molly Smith, finishing tied for 43rd with a score of 215 (-1). Molly shot a solid 70 (-2) in her last round. Katie Poots, also a sophomore, completed the tournament with a score of 225 (+3), putting her in tied for 51st place.

The remarkable One Kashima finished tied for 22nd place, managing a smooth score of 71 (-1) in her final round. The head coach had plenty of praise for her consistent performance, noting that she consistently delivers more in tournaments than in practice. Wow, what a compliment!

Competing as an individual, Jamie Camero finished tied for 22nd with an impressive score of 211 (-5), and senior Caroline Nemes wrapped up with a score of 223 (+7), finishing tied for 72nd.

Facing Tough Competition

The Knights went up against some tough competition, including four teams from Clippd’s top 25: Mississippi State (No. 10), North Carolina (No. 13), Duke (No. 18), and Kansas (No. 24). In fact, it was Baylor who claimed victory in this fiercely competitive tournament with a total score of 834 (-30), followed closely by Duke with 836 (-28).

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on their performance, the Knights know there’s always room for improvement. The head coach emphasized the importance of starting strong in future tournaments to tap into the team’s full potential. Up next, the team is gearing up for the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida, from February 16 to 18.

As they chart their course toward the Big 12 Championship scheduled for April 14-17 in Houston, Texas, the UCF women’s golf team remains focused on their lofty ambition of a National Championship.

With such talent, determination, and a sprinkle of competitive spirit, it’s exciting to think about what the rest of the season has in store!
