Orlando, FL – The UCF baseball team faced a tough defeat against No. 10 West Virginia (WVU) on Sunday afternoon, losing the final game of their series 4-3 at John Euliano Park. This loss resulted in a three-game sweep for WVU, who displayed solid form throughout the series.

With this victory, WVU improved its season record to 37-5 overall and 16-3 in Big 12 conference play. In contrast, UCF’s record dropped to 23-20 overall and 6-15 in conference action. This sweeping loss highlighted UCF’s inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities against a highly-ranked opponent.

UCF initially took control of the game, leading 2-1 in the early innings. The Knights managed to tie the game in the first inning when DeAmez Ross and Andrew Williamson hit back-to-back doubles. They then gained a brief lead in the second inning, where Ross contributed with an RBI double after Dylan King was hit by a pitch. This strong start, however, was overshadowed by a critical fifth inning.

WVU responded aggressively in the fifth, scoring three runs, which shifted the momentum of the game. A two-run double from Jace Rinehart during the inning was instrumental in regaining the lead for the Mountaineers. Although UCF attempted to close the gap with a run in the sixth inning, thanks to a sharp RBI single from Ross, the Knights could not find a way to further capitalize and ultimately fell short by one run.

On the mound, UCF reliever Dominic Castellano had an impressive outing, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, and striking out three batters. Castellano’s efforts provided a glimmer of hope for UCF as he effectively limited West Virginia’s scoring possibilities after the fifth inning; however, he could not support a struggling offense that failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Ross emerged as a standout player for UCF with a remarkable performance, finishing the game 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two doubles. His efforts at the plate showcased his hitting prowess, but were not enough to secure the team’s victory.

Looking ahead, UCF will aim to bounce back when they face North Florida on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home. This upcoming match represents a crucial opportunity for UCF as they will soon embark on a challenging stretch with seven consecutive away games beginning with a series against Oklahoma State. These games will be vital for UCF as they look to improve their record and regain momentum in their season.

This three-game sweep at the hands of a formidable West Virginia team serves as a learning experience for the Knights moving forward. Head coach Rich Wallace expressed that while the team played competently, they must learn to take advantage of opportunities if they wish to compete against stronger teams in the future.
