Daytona, Florida, recently buzzed with energy as young golf talent gathered at the beautiful LPGA International Golf Club for the annual LPGA Junior Open. Among those showcasing their skills was Bermuda’s own Sienna Mosquera, who put on a remarkable performance, finishing tied for fifth place in the 14-18 girls’ division. With a total of 223 shots over three days, Mosquera had scores of 75, 75, and a stellar 73.
With each swing of the club, Sienna expressed how much she enjoyed the thrill of competing. Through heartfelt posts on her social media, she shared her excitement not just for the game, but also for the unwavering support she received from her family and coaches. This camaraderie is vital for young athletes like her, who pour their hearts into every match.
Currently training at the prestigious Mike Bender Elite Junior Golf Academy in Orlando, Florida, Sienna is on a determined path to development. This summer, she is set to represent Bermuda at the Island Games in Orkney, an event she is eagerly preparing for. After the Games, Sienna will take another significant step in her golfing journey by starting her collegiate career at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Over the years, Sienna’s golf journey has evolved dramatically. Her love for the sport ignited at just nine years old when she transitioned from tennis to golf. Under the mentorship of the talented Bermudian golfer Kim Swan, she laid down the fundamentals that would propel her forward. Thanks to Swan, a former European Tour player, Sienna honed her skills early on.
A pivotal moment came when she turned twelve and moved to Switzerland. There, she trained under a former Ladies European Tour player named Mari Carmen. Upon returning to Bermuda, Sienna resumed training with Kim Swan, continuing her upward trajectory in the sport. Under the guidance of coach Dom Azzopardi, she significantly improved her game and is now a scratch player—a remarkable feat considering her handicap improved from 35 in just two years!
In her quest to refine her skills and gain competitive experience, Mosquera has participated in numerous events, including the notable Met PGA Junior Tour in New York where she secured a fifth-place finish out of 75 girls in 2022. She is also currently active in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour and the Future Series, events that allow her to showcase her talents while challenging her abilities.
Not only is she focused on her golf career, but Sienna also gives back to her community. She founded a golf club at Saltus Grammar School to spark interest among fellow students. In addition, her creative side shone through when she produced a documentary titled “What it Takes to Go Pro”, which highlights the inspiring journeys of local golf professionals. This impressive work even received recognition for Best Production Values at the Bermuda Youth Film Festival!
As Sienna continues her preparations for the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s Disney Junior Open in Orlando, she has her sights set on ambitious goals. Aiming to play Division 1 golf in college and ultimately become a professional golfer, Sienna Mosquera is indeed on a promising path. With her passion, dedication, and the support of her community, the future looks bright.
