Participants, including victims’ families and survivors, were permitted to bring groups of up to six people. Survivors were allowed one support person to accompany them during this emotional experience. Many of those attending expressed a complex mix of grief and nostalgia as they revisited the scene of the tragedy, where 49 people lost their lives in 2016 due to a terrorist attack.

Patience Murray, a survivor from that night, described her experience revisiting the site as surreal, reflecting on how a night of joy transformed into one of horror when the shooting began. Plans for the new memorial include significant features such as a memorial and reflection space, a survivors’ tribute wall, a healing garden, and a dedicated visitor’s center, all projected for completion by 2027.

Families are hopeful that the memorial will honor the diverse communities that frequented Pulse, particularly the LGBTQ and Latino populations. However, a divide exists among some families regarding the interpretation and design of the memorial.
