The Orlando City Council is moving forward with plans for a permanent memorial honoring the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. Scheduled to break ground in June 2026, this memorial aims to provide a space for remembrance and reflection at the site of the nightclub.
This past week, the Orlando City Council gathered to discuss plans for a permanent memorial dedicated to the 49 victims of the heartbreaking Pulse nightclub tragedy from 2016. After much anticipation and deliberation, the council reviewed a design proposal that has already won unanimous approval from the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee, a group made up of victims’ families and survivors.
The inspirational design was officially approved on February 4, and discussions at the recent council meeting were filled with emotional gratitude and support for the hard work put in by the advisory committee. While council members shared their positive feedback about the project, they opted not to take a formal vote just yet. There was, however, a strong consensus to move forward, which means the city will start looking for an architect and secure funding soon.
The chosen site for this heartfelt memorial is none other than the original location of the nightclub, situated at 1912 S. Orange Avenue at the intersection with E. Kaley Street. The design aims to transform the space into a place of remembrance and reflection for everyone affected by the tragic event. Key features will include a reflection pool right where the dance floor once thrived, alongside a stunning water wall that may display 49 pairs of dancing shoes—a poignant nod to the lives lost.
The memorial will incorporate a unique elliptical walkway adorned with 49 columns, each representing one of the victims. Additionally, the design will feature a variety of light installations, artfully interwoven with the vibrant colors of the rainbow, symbolizing love and acceptance. While the plan is to demolish most of the original nightclub structure—a decision that has stirred some controversy among committee members—the vision aims to create a beautiful sanctuary of remembrance.
The city is gearing up to gather bids for the architectural work in March 2025, with an eye toward breaking ground in June 2026, just in time to commemorate the 10th anniversary of this tragic event. The memorial is anticipated to be completed by the latter half of 2027, well before the end of Mayor Buddy Dyer’s term. This timeline highlights the city’s commitment to honoring the memories of the victims in a meaningful way.
Speaking of commitment, the advisory committee estimates a budget of $12 million for the memorial, but the city has currently set aside $7.5 million. To bridge this gap, state representatives are working to procure an additional $400,000 from the Florida Legislature. While funding efforts are underway, some unresolved design elements remain, including whether or not to preserve part of the club’s wall or replace it with an obelisk that signifies strength and remembrance.
Despite the continued progression, some voices in the community express concern over the memorial process. For example, one mother of a victim shared her feelings of exclusion from the advisory committee, raising questions about the legitimacy of the project. Yet, amid this complexity, it is encouraging to note that other areas, such as Osceola County, are planning their own tributes—like a 49-foot-tall “Wings of the Rainbow” sculpture at Brownie Wise Park, also honoring the victims and survivors.
As Orlando moves forward with these plans, the community is reminded that through the healing power of remembrance, love, and unity can shine brightly—even in the face of tragedy.
