Pedestrian Fatalities Rise on Colonial Drive in Orange County
Orange County, FL – A pedestrian was killed in a crash on Colonial Drive (State Road 50) on Saturday morning, marking another tragic incident on the busy roadway. The accident occurred just before 9 a.m. east of Saint Nicholas Avenue, when a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling eastbound made a U-turn to head westbound. The vehicle struck a 25-year-old man who was walking north across SR-50 at the time of the incident. Authorities have noted that the man was not using a marked crosswalk.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly and transported the victim to AdventHealth East Orlando. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Additional Incident Involving Pedestrian Fatality
This incident follows another pedestrian fatality that took place earlier that week on the same roadway. On Monday morning at approximately 6:48 a.m., a hit-and-run occurred on Colonial Drive as a vehicle was traveling eastbound near Sandy Creek Lane. Authorities reported that a pedestrian was on the southern grass shoulder of SR-50 when the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck him. The driver fled the scene immediately after the impact, leaving the victim, an adult male, deceased at the scene.
The FHP has recovered a vehicle part that may belong to a 2004-2015 Toyota Camry, suggesting it could be linked to the hit-and-run vehicle. Authorities are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 407-737-2213 or to call CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS.
Another Tragic Accident Involving a LYNX Bus
In a separate incident, a 67-year-old Orlando woman was struck and killed by a LYNX bus on Friday night around 9:12 p.m. This fatal crash happened on westbound W. Colonial Drive while the bus traveled near Charles Street. Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman entered the bus’s path while it was moving, and like the previous incidents, she was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
The woman was transported to a hospital after the accident, where she was pronounced dead. Fortunately, neither the bus driver nor any passengers on board were injured during this incident. The FHP is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the bus collision.
Context of Pedestrian Safety on Colonial Drive
The string of pedestrian fatalities along Colonial Drive has raised concerns regarding safety on this major thoroughfare. Notable for its heavy traffic, Colonial Drive has become a site of multiple incidents involving pedestrians, particularly where crosswalks are not present or heavily utilized. Law enforcement and safety advocates are increasingly focusing on measures to improve pedestrian safety in the area.
As the investigations by FHP remain ongoing, both the community and officials express their sympathies to the victims’ families and emphasize the need for heightened awareness and safety measures to prevent future accidents.
