Orlando is gearing up for an exciting series of events celebrating Asian American culture and promoting community engagement throughout late May and June. These events cater to a wide range of interests, ensuring that residents and visitors can partake in a variety of activities designed to foster connection and cultural appreciation.

The Orlando Public Library will host a Kung Fu Show on May 31 at 1 p.m. This event features vibrant performances including lion dance, kung fu, and tai chi demonstrations, providing an in-depth exploration of Chinese culture. Registration for this event is recommended. Interested participants can secure their spot by visiting ocls.info/aanhpi.

On the same day, the Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club will hold walking events in Maitland, starting at Walgreens between 8:00 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Participants can choose to walk either a 10K (6.2 miles) or a 5K (3.1 miles), promoting health and wellness in the community.

In a cultural collaboration, the Maitland Symphony Orchestra is set to perform at the Maitland Presbyterian Church on June 1 at 4 p.m., with free admission providing an opportunity for all to enjoy the musical celebration.

Residents interested in gardening can take part in the “Pop Up” Plant Clinics hosted by UF/IFAS Extension Orange County Master Gardener Volunteers. Clinics are scheduled for June 3 at the Windermere branch, and June 14 at the Winter Garden branch, along with additional sessions on June 14 and June 28 at Apenberry’s Nursery.

On June 7, residents are invited to an Adopt-A-Tree event at Barnett Park from 8 a.m. to noon. This initiative allows Orange County households to receive two trees, contributing to local environmental efforts. The Mid-Florida Milers will also lead another walking event on this day at Disney Springs, starting between 8:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Support networks are also highlighted with an eight-week Grief Forum for widows and widowers. This program will occur every Tuesday from June 10 to July 29 at the Presbyterian Church of Lakes, providing a supportive gathering for those coping with loss.

On June 11, the League of Women Voters Orange County plans to address pressing social issues with a program titled “Pride Under Attack: Defending LGBTQ+ Rights,” scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Winter Park Events Center.

Celebrations continue on June 14 with the Philippine Independence Day Celebration at the Marks Street Senior Recreation Complex from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can look forward to talent shows, music, dances, and food vendors, honoring the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. A Juneteenth Freedom Day Paint Party is set for the same day from 10 a.m. to noon at Howell Branch Preserve, with reservations required.

Following these events, the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will offer summer family tours on June 17, 24, July 8, and 15, allowing families to engage with the arts and history.

The Orange Audubon Society will showcase entries in the 37th Annual Kit and Sidney Chertok Florida Native Nature Photography Contest on June 19 at Harry P. Leu Gardens, highlighting the beauty of local nature.

On June 20 and June 27, as well as July 11 and 18, summer family films will be screened at the Morse Museum, aiming to provide accessible entertainment for families during the summer months.

Additionally, a Celebration of Juneteenth Community Event is scheduled for June 21 in Winter Garden at Charlie Mae Wilder Park, featuring live music and activities designed to bring the community together.

Finally, residents are invited to participate in a Caribbean Culture Celebration on June 28 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hiawassee branch, celebrating Caribbean music, food tastings, and crafts.

Throughout these months, there are numerous volunteer opportunities available with organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Florida Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, and the Guardian ad Litem Program, allowing community members to support their neighbors in need.

These diverse events reflect Orlando’s commitment to cultural enrichment and community engagement while encouraging active participation from all age groups.
