Students engage in hands-on learning during the Disney Dreamers Academy.
Diongela Turner, a 14-year-old from Orlando, has realized her dream by participating in the Disney Dreamers Academy 2025. This program empowers high school students to explore various career paths, including STEM, business, and healthcare. With her mother’s support, Diongela, aspiring to be a travel nurse, gained valuable mentorship and participated in hands-on medical activities, making lasting connections with peers and industry leaders. Her journey showcases dedication and the importance of believing in oneself, highlighting the influence of strong role models.
In the magical city of Orlando, a bright star has shone a little brighter! Diongela Turner, a 14-year-old freshman from Jones High School, recently took a giant leap towards her dreams by participating in the 18th annual Disney Dreamers Academy held at Walt Disney World. This exciting program brings together 100 high school students from all over the United States, offering them the chance to gain valuable mentorship and career guidance in various fields.
Since its inception in 2008, the Disney Dreamers Academy has dedicated itself to inspiring students by focusing on crucial career paths, including STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), business, politics, culinary arts, medicine, and entertainment. Diongela, who has always had a passion for helping others, aspires to become a travel nurse. After hearing about this fantastic program in middle school, she patiently waited until she reached ninth grade to apply.
Diongela’s journey hasn’t always been straightforward. Her mother, Dionne Turner, has played a monumental role in building her daughter’s confidence and individuality. Dionne is not just a supportive parent; she’s also the author of the book “Being Yourself Matters.” There was a challenging time when Diongela was labeled a slow learner back in second grade, an experience that significantly affected her self-esteem. Nonetheless, she rose above it, aided by her mother’s guidance and encouragement.
During her time at the Disney Dreamers Academy, Diongela was immersed in hands-on medical activities that included learning how to take blood pressure. She participated in interactive workshops that empowered her to speak up for herself and connect with fellow dreamers and professionals alike. The chance to bond with other motivated students and industry leaders proved to be a highlight of her experience.
But it wasn’t just all work for Diongela! The event was filled with motivational talks and networking opportunities, not to mention a sprinkle of theme park fun. This year, celebrity mentors like Tyler James Williams, Rickey Smiley, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. appeared, providing inspiration and advice to the young attendees. The academy ensured that the journey was unforgettable, capping it all off with a celebratory parade at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, where students were honored for their achievements.
The overarching goal of the Disney Dreamers Academy is to help students recognize their potential while encouraging them to give back to their communities. Year after year, applications open during the summer, allowing high school students aged 13 to 19 across the U.S. to take this leap of faith towards their dreams.
Diongela Turner’s experience at the Disney Dreamers Academy is a testament to the power of perseverance and opportunity. With her sights set on becoming a travel nurse and the support of a loving mother, this young dreamer shows us all that with dedication and the right guidance, the sky’s the limit. Here’s to hoping more students take part in this incredible journey and unlock their true potential!
