Orlando’s Public Meeting to Enhance Corrine/Virginia/Forest Corridor

News Summary

The City of Orlando will hold a public meeting on June 17th to discuss proposed safety and accessibility improvements for the Corrine/Virginia/Forest corridor. This initiative aims to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety, particularly for children traveling to the local Audubon Park K–8 School. The meeting will allow community members to provide feedback on the enhancements, which are part of a larger vision for the area’s redevelopment.

Orlando – The City of Orlando is set to hold a public meeting on June 17th to discuss proposed safety and accessibility improvements for the Corrine/Virginia/Forest corridor. This corridor is a vital thoroughfare that runs through the Audubon Park neighborhood, home to several local businesses including East End Market, Redlight Redlight, Hellcats USA, Primrose Shop, Park Ave CD’s, and Big Daddy’s.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in the Audubon Park K–8 School Cafeteria from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will serve as a platform for community members to provide feedback on the planned enhancements, which are part of a broader initiative to improve safety and accessibility in the area.

The improvement plans stem from a visioning process conducted by MetroPlan Orlando in 2019. Temporary upgrades have already been implemented in the corridor, including the installation of a crossing light at East End Market and a quick-build cycle track. However, the full execution of the slated improvements has been hindered by a lack of necessary funding.

The proposed enhancements aim to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly benefiting children traveling to and from the Audubon Park K–8 School. Advocates for the project assert that the improvements could foster safer pathways and ultimately encourage more foot and bike traffic in the region, which would support local businesses.

The ambitious overhaul plan encompasses a comprehensive redesign of the Virginia/Corrine Drive corridor, with an estimated cost of $16 million. This redesign includes a pedestrian and cycling trail that will extend to Lake Ivanhoe’s Gaston Edwards Park at Orange Avenue. Such developments are intended to significantly enhance road safety and accessibility while promoting walkability in the vicinity of the school.

Engineering aspects of the project have been outlined as part of MetroPlan’s priorities, with potential construction slated to commence in the 2024 – 2025 fiscal year. The Corrine Drive Complete Streets Study reflects a collaborative approach that was created following numerous community meetings and public input sessions. This engaged methodology is designed to ensure the final engineering designs are ready for implementation, while adjustments may still be made during the planning process.

Community involvement is being actively promoted, with the Orlando Bike Coalition particularly encouraging cyclists and residents of the corridor to participate in the upcoming meeting. Their participation is deemed vital for conveying the importance of these improvements, emphasizing the need for safer routes and increased accessibility within this vibrant area.

As the date approaches, residents and stakeholders are urged to attend the meeting to voice their views and contribute to shaping the future of the Corrine/Virginia/Forest corridor. The outcome of this initiative not only seeks to prioritize safety but also to bolster the local economy by fostering a more walkable and bike-friendly environment.
