Orlando – A 20-year-old man from Orlando, Darius Stephone Nichols, faces serious charges including first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in connection with the tragic death of his 3-month-old daughter, Nova. The case has raised concerns over alleged abusive behavior and the circumstances surrounding the infant’s injuries.
On April 30, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an unresponsive baby at Nichols’ residence. When they arrived, emergency responders were already administering CPR to Nova. She was subsequently transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead later that evening.
Initially, Nichols claimed that Nova fell from the couch, resulting in her unresponsiveness. However, an autopsy revealed that Nova suffered from multiple acute skull fractures and bilateral retinal hemorrhages. Investigators found further evidence of past abuse, including several healing rib fractures, which contradicted Nichols’ explanation of the events. Authorities described the injuries as indicative of “horrific abuse and trauma.”
During the investigation, officials discovered suspected fentanyl tablets and detected a strong odor of marijuana in Nichols’ home, raising additional concerns about the environment in which Nova was living. The couch from which Nichols claimed she fell was approximately 20 inches high, leading authorities to question the plausibility of his account.
Following the autopsy results and investigation findings, Nichols was arrested and taken to Orange County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond. In a moment of apparent remorse, he admitted responsibility for Nova’s injuries while being transported by a deputy, expressing regret over his actions as he struggled to calm her down.
A court hearing for Nichols is scheduled for May 13 at 9 a.m. This case highlights broader concerns regarding child welfare and domestic environments, particularly where substance abuse may play a role in the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals, such as infants.
