Orlando residents are invited to apply for the 2025 Mayor’s City Academy, an engaging and educational program that offers participants a chance to learn about the workings of city government. The application period will be open from June 2 to June 27, providing a unique opportunity for local individuals to gain insight into various city services and operations.

This 12-week program will allow participants to tour city facilities, meet staff, and understand essential services, including fire response, waste management, and public works. Sessions will take place on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with dinner provided to attendees. Upon completion of the academy, graduates will receive a certificate and have the opportunity to take a photo with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

Individuals interested in applying for the Mayor’s City Academy can find more information at Orlando.gov/MCA or by contacting the city at neighborhoods@orlando.gov.

Celebrating Local Culture with “407 Day”

Additionally, Orlando celebrated its local culture with the unveiling of a new mural on April 7, coinciding with the city’s first-ever “407 Day”. This mural commemorates the attractions and spirit of the city, enhancing its community pride. Designed by Clark Orr and painted by artists Kristi Burke, Ryan Semple, and Sabrina Shumaker, the grand unveiling included a poetry recital by the City of Orlando Poet Laureate and a proclamation declaring April 7 as “407 Day” from Mayor Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.

The mural is part of the “Unbelievably Real” marketing initiative spearheaded by Visit Orlando and the Orlando Economic Partnership, aimed at promoting the city’s attractions and vibrant community.

Community Development and Educational Initiatives

Orlando is also focused on community growth through the activities of its City Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), which was established in 1980 and encompasses 1,664 acres of downtown. The CRA plays a vital role in revitalizing struggling urban areas through planning and financing tools, including Tax Increment Financing (TIF).

The Downtown Development Board (DDB), active since 1971, supports economic, governmental, and cultural initiatives within the downtown area. Among its ongoing projects is the plan to repurpose the Bob Carr Theater, which reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing cultural venues.

Educational Opportunities for Children

In addition to cultural initiatives, Orlando has recently opened a new tuition-free Bezos Academy, situated at Village on Mercy, which provides Montessori-inspired preschool education for up to forty children. This initiative, funded and developed by the nonprofit organization Ability Housing, aims to support the educational and developmental needs of young children in the community. The opening ceremony was attended by city leaders, emphasizing the significance of education and stable housing in fostering community growth.

Several other Bezos Academy locations are slated to open across Florida, with three more planned in Central Florida, showcasing an ongoing commitment to provide educational opportunities within the community.

Orlando continues to advance its mission of engaging residents, enhancing cultural pride, and improving educational access, marking significant strides in community development and connection.
