Orlando Gifted Academy Announces Major Renovations

News Summary

Orlando Gifted Academy is set to undergo significant renovations funded by a $52.6 million investment from Orange County Public Schools. A new facility will accommodate up to 800 students, featuring modern infrastructure and sustainable designs. While renovations are underway, students will temporarily relocate to Orange Technical College Winter Park Campus. Updates on the project were shared during a recent community meeting, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing educational experiences for gifted students. Construction is expected to begin in December 2026 and conclude by summer 2028.

Orlando – The design phase for a new facility and significant renovations at Orlando Gifted Academy has commenced, with Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) announcing an investment of $52.6 million, funded by a half-penny sales tax approved by local voters. A community meeting held recently at the school’s auditorium provided updates to students, families, and staff about the highly anticipated project, which aims to create a customized environment for gifted students.

The planned renovations will take place on a 9-acre site and will be designed to accommodate up to 800 students. The new facility is expected to open its doors in 2028. School board member Stephanie Vanos emphasized that the current facilities, built in 1948, require substantial upgrades to meet modern educational needs. The new design will incorporate sustainability features, modern infrastructure, and state-of-the-art science labs, ensuring that students have access to the latest technology and learning environments.

As part of the renovation plan, students from Orlando Gifted Academy will temporarily relocate to the Orange Technical College Winter Park Campus this summer while construction is underway. Prior to their move, OCPS will enhance the OTC Winter Park campus to include a new cafeteria, a media center, and large multipurpose rooms, making the transition smoother for the students. A “Meet the Teacher” event is scheduled for August 7, which will allow families to familiarize themselves with the new temporary location.

Principal Sean Maguire has assured parents that the school will prioritize maintaining a positive learning environment during this transition phase. However, some parents have raised concerns about the timeline of the renovation project, particularly the possibility of their children graduating before the new campus is completed. This concern was echoed by parents like Jamie Marshall, who expressed disappointment that her daughters would not be able to enjoy the new facility before graduating.

OCPS officials stated that another community meeting will be organized once the project reaches its 30% design stage, expected around October. Construction is slated to begin in December 2026, with the goal of completing the project by summer 2028. In addition to modern learning spaces, the renovations will include new technology areas and covered canopies connecting various buildings, enhancing accessibility and functionality across the campus.

The ongoing commitment by OCPS to provide a tailored educational environment for gifted students reflects a broader recognition of the need for specialized facilities that meet the unique demands of this student population. The upcoming enhancements at Orlando Gifted Academy are a crucial step in fostering a supportive and enriched learning atmosphere.

As the community eagerly awaits the project’s progression, OCPS remains focused on ensuring that the transition for students and families is as seamless as possible, while planning for the future of gifted education in Orlando.
