Celebration of Orlando's 150th anniversary with community gathering

News Summary

Orlando is marking its 150th incorporation anniversary with a year-long celebration featuring various events, including exhibitions and community activities. Kicking off with a commemorative banner unveiling by Mayor Buddy Dyer, the festivities will culminate in a grand event in July 2023. Central to the celebration are the Orlando Collected exhibit at the Orange County Regional History Center and public art displays. The city invites residents and local businesses to join in the celebrations by hosting their own events and sharing stories, reflecting on Orlando’s vibrant history and community spirit.

Orlando is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its incorporation with a series of events and exhibitions that honor its rich history. The year-long celebration commenced on February 4, 2023, when Mayor Buddy Dyer unveiled a commemorative banner at City Commons Plaza, setting the tone for a series of activities throughout the year.

The grand anniversary event is scheduled for July 31 at Discover Downtown on Orange Avenue, offering free admissions to various attractions across the city. This event serves as a focal point for the community and will showcase Orlando’s past, present, and future.

Throughout the year, the city will feature various events, including the Orlando Collected exhibit, which opens in April at the Orange County Regional History Center. This exhibit will highlight 150 distinctive items that reflect the city’s storied past. Additionally, a public art exhibition titled Changing Face of Orlando will present historical and modern photo comparisons, illustrating the city’s significant transformation over the decades.

Residents and local businesses are encouraged to take part in the festivities by hosting their own events and promotions, as well as sharing their personal Orlando stories on social media. A digital history board has also been established, allowing residents to submit photos and anecdotes that contribute to a collective memory of the city.

Orlando, originally known as Mosquito County, was founded around Fort Gatlin, which was established in 1838 during the second Seminole War. Early settlers focused on raising cattle and growing citrus fruits, establishing a community around the fort. The settlement later evolved into the town of Jernigan, which was renamed Orlando in 1875 with a population of just 85 residents, of whom only 22 were eligible to vote.

Orlando’s growth accelerated with the introduction of rail service, which helped the population exceed 2,000 within a decade. However, the Great Depression caused a slowdown in growth and highlighted racial tensions within the city, particularly in segregated neighborhoods like Jonestown, Parramore, and Callahan.

In 1940, the establishment of an Army air base at Orlando’s first municipal airport marked a significant turning point for the city. The end of World War II ushered in a period of prosperity, and Orlando began to establish itself as an entertainment destination, notably with the opening of Gatorland in 1949.

A pivotal moment in Orlando’s history occurred in November 1965 when plans for a new theme park by Walt Disney were announced. This announcement catalyzed a surge in tourism and development, reshaping the city into the renowned tourist destination it is today.

Despite its transformation, Orlando has faced challenges, including a legacy of racial injustice that still affects impoverished neighborhoods and historic communities. However, the city has made strides towards healing and inclusivity, particularly through its increasing acceptance of the LGBTQ community.

In response to the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre, Orlando unified around a message of love and acceptance, striving to overcome divisions and promote kindness. This spirit of resilience and hospitality continues to define Orlando as it looks toward the future, committed to innovation and community growth.

As the city marks this significant milestone, it not only reflects on its past but also celebrates the vibrant community that has come together, demonstrating Orlando’s enduring spirit and dedication to progress.
