Orlando, Florida – National Police Week is taking place across the United States, highlighting the dedication and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This annual observance sees participation from police departments in both rural and urban areas, with local communities in Central Florida commemorating their fallen heroes through various tribute activities throughout the week.

Events such as wreath-laying ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and moments of silence during roll calls are being held to honor the sacrifices made by officers who gave their lives to protect their communities. These memorials reflect the community’s respect and appreciation for the law enforcement individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.

This year, national events occurring in Washington, D.C., are serving as focal points for these tributes, where officers, survivors, and supporters gather for a series of memorials and ceremonies. These gatherings are particularly poignant, offering a space for reflection and remembrance on a national scale.

As part of the observance, various local agencies are spotlighting how they are honoring their fallen officers. Community members are encouraged to participate in remembrance activities, ensuring that the stories of these officers are not forgotten. Engaging in these ceremonies allows the public to express gratitude and show solidarity with the law enforcement community.

On Day 2 of National Police Week, a special discussion will feature two guests from the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) Foundation. Featured speakers include Virginia Coates Ricks, the Southeast Regional Trustee, and Kyle McCallister, the Northeast Regional Trustee. They will discuss the emotional impact of memorial events and the support provided to families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. This discussion aims to shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by survivors while honoring their loved ones’ memories.

In local news, the Orlando Police Department confirmed that Officer Marlon Binet has been arrested on charges including unarmed robbery, grand theft under $5,000, and battery. The alleged incident occurred on March 16, when Binet reportedly confronted a victim and snatched the victim’s phone during an altercation. Following the confrontation, the victim called 911, leading to an investigation.

Authorities identified Officer Binet through images retrieved from the victim’s phone, which reportedly showed Binet becoming aggressive during the incident. The victim was able to recognize Binet in a photo lineup provided to them by investigators. Binet has been an employee of the Orlando Police Department since February 2018 but has been relieved of duty pending further investigation into the charges against him.

National Police Week serves not only as a time to remember and honor those who have lost their lives but also highlights ongoing discussions about the welfare of officers and the impact of their roles on community safety. As communities come together to honor their local heroes, the importance of unity, respect, and remembrance becomes even clearer.
