Joe Ferguson exploring the capabilities of Bryson DeChambeau's unique golf irons.
PGA Professional Joe Ferguson embarks on a unique testing experience with Bryson DeChambeau’s exclusive 3D-printed Avoda irons. The trial reveals insights into club performance, with Ferguson adapting to the unique specifications of the clubs, including their unusual weight and length. He experiences both challenges and enhanced distances while appreciating the technology that shapes modern golf. Ferguson’s journey showcases the innovative side of golf equipment and his gratitude to Avoda Golf for the opportunity.
In a fascinating twist for golf enthusiasts, PGA Professional Joe Ferguson embarked on a unique challenge by trying out the exclusive equipment of current golf sensation Bryson DeChambeau. The aim? To replicate DeChambeau’s one-of-a-kind club set during a professional tournament. Ferguson was equipped with DeChambeau’s actual backup set of bespoke, 3D-printed Avoda irons, which features an incredible design that only exists in two sets worldwide – one for DeChambeau and the other for Ferguson.
Ferguson’s journey commenced with an initial test of the impressive 60˚ lob wedge at the driving range. This lob wedge, measuring 37.5 inches (which is the length of all the irons in the set), felt a little unusual to Ferguson, as he is accustomed to using traditional-length clubs. While DeChambeau typically employs custom-made Ping Glide 4.0 wedges tailored to specific weight requirements, Ferguson had to make do with the wedges provided by Avoda, which matched the original specifications.
One of the standout features of this unique club set is the gripping. The Jumbo Max Tour Series XL grips used by DeChambeau boast a hefty diameter of 1.46 inches, which is much thicker than the more common grips of around one inch. Additionally, these grips weigh a whopping 123 grams, which is over twice as much as the average Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip at just 52 grams. Add the total weight of DeChambeau’s club set – approximately 525 grams – and you’ve got a recipe that demands a considerable amount of strength and speed.
During his initial testing, Ferguson found the performance of the lob wedge to be somewhat underwhelming, with a carry distance of only 80 yards on his launch monitor. This drop in distance could potentially be linked to inconsistencies in clubhead speed due to the high loft of the club. However, despite these early challenges, Ferguson quickly adapted to the longer length of the clubs. He enjoyed the higher stance they provided, which brought a different feel to his overall swing.
As he progressed, Ferguson discovered that using the 8-iron yielded impressive results, achieving a carry distance of around 180 yards, which is about 20 yards more than his usual distance with that club. Interestingly, although labeled an 8-iron, this club is essentially a 6-iron in terms of length and loft. Even more astonishing was the performance of the 5-iron, which offered carries exceeding 225 yards, a noticeable increase compared to his typical peak of 200 yards.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of Ferguson’s experience with these unique irons was the curved face design. Even when hitting off-center shots, he noticed an improvement in accuracy, which hinted at a potential for self-correction. This characteristic could be a game-changer for golfers struggling with consistency.
Ferguson has expressed immense gratitude to Avoda Golf for granting him this exceptional opportunity. His respect for Bryson DeChambeau as a player has undoubtedly deepened through this hands-on experience. Sharing his journey on the popular Golf Monthly YouTube channel, he looks forward to showcasing his tournament performance with a highlight video that is sure to excite fellow golf fans.
This interaction with DeChambeau’s clubs not only allowed Ferguson to push his own game to new heights but also opened a window into the innovative technology that is reshaping the world of golf. Who knows what other surprises such clubs could unveil in the future?
