Jacksonville, Florida – A significant fire occurred in the hourly garage at Jacksonville International Airport (JIA) on Friday afternoon, May 16, 2025, causing considerable damage and disruptions to airport operations. Approximately 50 vehicles were reported damaged in the blaze, which is believed to have originated from one car on the second floor and subsequently spread to nearby vehicles.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan announced during a press conference that the fire was under control; however, it remained active. Firefighters initially faced challenges entering the structure due to safety concerns. As a result, a drone was deployed to assess the situation from above. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) utilized extensive resources to combat the fire, including seven engine companies, three crash trucks, five ladders, and multiple drones.
Fire Chief Keith Powers reported that the intense heat from the fire caused a partial collapse of both the second and third floors of the parking garage. Approximately 30 minutes after the initial collapse, a secondary collapse occurred, further complicating the firefighting efforts. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries resulting from this incident.
As a precaution, the airport was temporarily closed, leading to the diversion of flights and delays affecting at least two dozen scheduled departures and arrivals. The hourly parking garage is now closed indefinitely while a structural assessment is conducted to evaluate the integrity of the facility. In contrast, other parking options including the Daily Garage, Daily Surface Lot, and Economy Lots remain open, with shuttle buses facilitating access for travelers.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office successfully opened surrounding streets around the airport shortly after 6 p.m. the same day, alleviating traffic congestion in the area. Travelers affected by the fire were advised to check their flight status with airlines, as the disruptions may have impacted itineraries.
Local officials, including City Council President and Councilman Reggie Gaffney Jr., provided reassurances regarding safety for travelers and extended gratitude for the efforts of first responders. The JFRD also captured video footage showing the aggressive onset of the fire, although the exact cause of ignition is still undetermined.
According to structural engineer Andres Lopera, the investigation will concentrate on determining the temperature and duration of the fire to assess the potential damage to the concrete structure of the parking garage. Fire experts will play a pivotal role in understanding the implications for the ongoing integrity of the building.
In light of the situation, travelers are encouraged to consider off-airport parking alternatives or utilize ride-sharing services because on-airport parking facilities have reached their capacity. This ensures that visitors can still access the airport despite the ongoing challenges presented by the fire.
