Gay Days Orlando to Celebrate Amid Leadership Change

News Summary

The Gay Days celebration in Orlando will take place from June 5-8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton at SeaWorld. With expected smaller crowds due to WorldPride coinciding with the same weekend, new leadership is stepping in to maintain the event’s spirit. Attendees can look forward to traditional activities like drag bingo and foam parties, alongside new interactive events. The event underscores community resilience despite challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Florida.

Orlando, FL – The Gay Days celebration will take place from June 5-8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Orlando at SeaWorld, amid leadership transitions and anticipated smaller crowds. This year, the event expects reduced attendance due in part to WorldPride coinciding with the same weekend in Washington, D.C., but the organizers assure participants that the core festivities will remain largely intact.

The current owner of Gay Days, Joseph Clark, is stepping away to focus on personal matters, handing over leadership to Charles Cantrell, who has been involved with the organization for nearly two decades, along with Josh Duke, who is also a partner listed on the Gay Days website. Both Cantrell and Duke have pledged to keep the spirit of the event alive and maintain the scheduled lineup of activities.

Despite the changes in leadership, attendees can expect familiar favorites such as drag bingo, XXX porn bingo, puppy mosh, and the legendary foam party. New this year are interactive events titled “Are You Smarter Than A Porn Star” and “Are You Smarter Than A Drag Queen,” designed to engage participants via their smartphones.

Schedule of Events

The festivities kick off on June 4 with a free Gay Days Movie Night featuring the film “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,” at Creative Village Orlando at 7 p.m. The official Kick Off Party, sponsored by Harmony Healthcare, is set for June 5 from 7-10 p.m. at the host hotel, featuring performances by notable entertainers.

On June 6, participants can enjoy the Miss Gay Days Pageant, while June 7 will see performances including “Golden Girls: The Tribute Show” and the Mr. Gay Days Leather competition. The celebration will wrap up with a free Gay Days Closing Party on June 8.

Event Layout Changes

This year’s gathering will feature some layout changes aimed at enhancing the overall experience. The west pool will be designated for a DJ, creating a lively atmosphere, while the main pool will provide a quieter space for relaxation. Additionally, the venue has moved the expo to a central location in the hotel lobby, increasing accessibility for guests.

Ongoing Commitment and Community Support

Gay Days aims to fill the host hotel for its 35th anniversary next year and is encouraging community support to ensure future success. Participants traditionally don red shirts during the event, representing celebration and solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community. The event does not receive sponsorship from Disney, yet it frequently aligns with Pride Month celebrations in Florida.

While many participants take advantage of nearby theme parks, the host hotel has plenty of activities, including popular events such as pool parties and drag queen Bingo. However, attendees should remember that they need to purchase regular theme park tickets for any visits to the parks during Gay Days.

Context of the LGBTQ+ Community in Florida

In recent years, Florida has faced criticism for its treatment of the LGBTQ+ community, exacerbated by political actions that many perceive as discriminatory. Nonetheless, the Gay Days celebration stands as a testament to resilience and community, continuing its rich tradition despite the challenges ahead. As the celebration unfolds, it aims to foster unity, joy, and pride within the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
