Orlando, Florida – A five-vehicle crash on Florida’s Turnpike sent an FHP trooper and the driver of a pickup truck to the hospital with minor injuries on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 5:26 p.m. in the northbound lanes near State Road 417, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The chain of events began when a semitruck traveling south attempted to change lanes, sideswiping a 2005 Toyota Camry. In reaction to the impact, a 2004 Dodge pickup truck, which was following closely behind, swerved left, colliding with the left side of the Camry before impacting the front of the semitruck. This severe collision caused the Dodge pickup to overturn and cross the northbound lanes.
As the Dodge continued its roll, it collided with the top of a parked FHP patrol vehicle located on the outside shoulder of the highway. At that moment, an FHP trooper was standing outside the patrol car. Fortunately, the trooper was able to evade the collision, although he briefly fell, sustaining only minor injuries in the process.
After hitting the patrol vehicle, the overturned Dodge crashed into a concrete barrier and subsequently went down an embankment. The driver of the Dodge was transported to the hospital alongside the injured trooper, both sustaining minor injuries.
The impact with the patrol car also caused it to be pushed into the travel lanes, where it collided with a fifth vehicle, identified as a 2024 Buick Enclave. Fortunately, the drivers of the semitruck, the Camry, and the Buick Enclave were not injured and remained at the crash site for authorities to assess the situation.
As investigations continue, it remains unclear exactly what led to the initial lane change by the semitruck. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently handling the investigation and expects to release more information at a later date.
