Orlando, Florida – The prestigious Florida Teacher of the Year award was celebrated at a gala event held at Rosen Shingle Creek on Saturday, marking a recognition of outstanding educators across the state. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis addressed attendees, emphasizing the state’s commitment to enhancing civics education and announcing a substantial budget increase of $1.36 billion for teacher salaries, a rise of $101.6 million compared to the previous fiscal year.

During the event, five finalists for the Florida Teacher of the Year were officially acknowledged, each receiving a check for $20,000. Among the finalists was Brandi Nicole Anderson, who teaches seventh-grade civics and social studies at Indian Trails Middle School in Flagler County. Anderson boasts 16 years of teaching experience and, if selected as the grand-prize winner, would be the first recipient of the Teacher of the Year award from Flagler County.

The other four finalists included:

  • Autumn Crabtree – A culinary arts teacher at Crystal River High School in Citrus County, also certified in mathematics and family and consumer science.
  • Shelly Teel – A third-grade teacher at Westside Elementary in Columbia County.
  • Katy Jo Harrison – A first-grade teacher at Hosford Elementary and Junior High School in Liberty County.

Governor DeSantis underscored the demand for competent civics education within the state, reinforcing the necessity of nurturing informed citizens. Despite the positive budget announcement, the event also highlighted challenges within the education system, particularly regarding federal funding issues. Approximately $6.8 billion in approved funds for K-12 schools is currently withheld, raising concerns among educators and school districts.

Anderson’s district, Flagler County, faces its own difficulties with a budget deficit, emphasizing the importance of the Teacher of the Year recognition not only in celebrating educational excellence but also in drawing attention to local funding needs. The Florida Teacher of the Year program aims to celebrate and elevate the education profession, recognizing outstanding educators from a pool of over 175,000 public school teachers statewide.

At the gala, all 76 district Teachers of the Year received a bonus of $10,000, acknowledging the critical role they play in educating Florida’s youth. The event also featured Florida’s new education commissioner, Anastasios “Stasi” Kamoutsas, who attended to support the recognition of teachers’ contributions to the education system.

This year’s awards reflect a significant effort by the state to honor the dedication and achievements of educators. As the finalists prepare for the announcement of the overall Teacher of the Year, the focus remains on advocating for necessary resources to ensure that all teachers and schools are adequately supported.
