The start of the 2025 professional golf season has seen several Fighting Illini alumni shine on various prestigious tours including the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf League. Thomas Detry leads with impressive performances, currently ranked No. 59 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Fellow alumni Nick Hardy and Brian Campbell are also making their mark, competing together in key events. Meanwhile, the University of Illinois men’s golf team prepares for its first NCAA postseason tournament, continuing a legacy of excellence in collegiate golf.
The 2025 professional golf season has kicked off in style for several Fighting Illini alumni, showcasing their skills across various prestigious tours like the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, LIV Golf League, and PGA Tour Champions. It’s an exciting time on the greens, especially for fans of these talented players!
Leading the charge is Thomas Detry, who made a remarkable impression right out of the gate with an impressive T5 finish at The Sentry held in Maui from January 2-5, 2025. Following that, he kept the momentum going by making his second consecutive cut at the Sony Open in Honolulu the following week. As it stands, Detry is climbing the charts and currently holds the spot of No. 59 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), making him the highest-ranked former Illini player at this moment.
Joining Detry on the greens are fellow Fighting Illini alumni Nick Hardy and Brian Campbell. These three golfers had the chance to compete alongside each other at both the Sony Open and the American Express in La Quinta, California. Excitingly, they are all present at the Farmers Insurance Open this week at the famed Torrey Pines, a sought-after venue known for its breathtaking views and challenging layout.
On another front, Thomas Pieters is taking on new challenges as he transitions from Range Goats GC to 4Aces GC for his third season in the LIV Golf League, set to commence from February 6-8. Meanwhile, Pieters showcased his skill at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour from January 16-19. His competitor, former Illini Adrien Dumont de Chassart, is also set to compete alongside him at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, adding more excitement to the mix.
Continuing to show strength in the game, veteran golfer Steve Stricker had a solid performance during the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii, finishing tied for 19th place. His consistent play is sure to be inspiring for those following the PGA Tour Champions as he aims for even more success this season.
The Korn Ferry Tour has also been buzzing with activity, particularly thanks to Luke Guthrie. He found his stride with a T76 finish at The Bahamas Golf Classic and followed that up with an impressive T5 finish at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic. This marks his best performance on the Korn Ferry Tour since May 2019, signaling he is one to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
Looking ahead, the University of Illinois men’s golf team is gearing up to host an NCAA postseason tournament for the very first time at the Atkins Golf Club from May 12-14, 2025. The Fighting Illini program has had a long and impressive history, with 22 NCAA Regional appearances since 1989, and remarkable achievements under head coach Mike Small. It is worth noting that they clinched six NCAA Regional Championships, which is tied for fourth in all-time history!
Renovations at Atkins Golf Club in 2022 revitalized the venue, allowing it to host significant events such as the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate in 2023 and 2024. The team showcased their determination in the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, tying for fifth place after a hard-fought match against Georgia Tech.
The excitement doesn’t stop there, as various Illini golfers are participating in Q-School events across locations like West Palm Beach and Albuquerque. It really is a thrilling time for alumni and current players alike, setting the stage for an exceptional golf season!
