Originally known as the Dunedin Isles Golf Club, it was purchased by the city of Dunedin in 1939, evolving into a popular municipal golfing spot.

Fast-forward a few years to 1944, when the PGA of America made Dunedin Golf Club its headquarters. This was a big deal! They even renamed it the PGA National Golf Club. During this period, the club proudly hosted 18 consecutive Senior PGA Championships and was the birthplace of the very first PGA Merchandise Show in 1954. Talk about a buzzing hub of golfing history!

Restoration for the Ages

Over the decades, the course experienced numerous renovations that modified its original layout. Unfortunately, some of these changes led to green complexes shrinking by as much as 50%. However, in 2014, hope was restored when the Dunedin Golf Club was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Things really took a turn starting in March 2022 with the ambitious restoration project. Led by a true expert in Donald Ross’s designs, the team set to work uncovering the original greens, which had been buried under layers of material for a whopping 75 years. The aim? To return them to their original contours and sizes, ensuring they faithfully reflect what Ross originally envisioned.

The layout of the course remains steadfast, with only a few bunkers being relocated to accommodate the advancements in modern golfing equipment. This restoration isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s all about reviving the historical and strategic essence that made the course a gem in the first place, providing golfers with the variety and challenge originally intended.

Golfers Rejoice!

Since reopening in December 2022, the response from eager golfers has been fantastic! Many have praised the authenticity of the course, feeling as though they’ve taken a step back in time to experience the game as Ross meant it to be played. Today, players can enjoy a round of golf at Dunedin Golf Club for green fees ranging from $85 to $130 for 18 holes, offering a taste of historical golf at almost time-capsule prices.

This rejuvenation has allowed Dunedin Golf Club to stand shoulder to shoulder with other premier municipal courses in Florida, such as the classic Winter Park in Orlando and The Park at West Palm Beach.
