Transformative Street Changes

Under the recent plans, Orange Avenue will feature a redesigned layout that includes a northbound lane, a southbound lane, and a center lane featuring a substantial median. This new configuration will accommodate curbside activities such as pickup/drop-off zones, outdoor dining, and communal gathering spaces.

Additionally, the plans involve creating a new pocket park at 30 South Orange, an empty lot located at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Pine Street. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to green spaces that contribute to community engagement.

Upgrades and New Developments

The updates to Magnolia Avenue aim to mirror Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, creating an attractive commercial area. The establishment of festival streets and revamps of Church Street into a Central Plaza highlight Dyer’s vision for dynamic community interactions.

Significant projects announced include the Canopy project, which will create an immersive civic space under the I-4 overpass, with groundbreaking scheduled for 2025. This space is intended to connect Church Street to the Kia Center, reinforcing downtown’s sense of community.

The local government has declared a Local State of Emergency for downtown, leading to an end to liquor sales at midnight and a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. This action follows a recent shooting incident that led to fatalities and multiple injuries during Halloween celebrations, prompting a commitment to increased police presence in the area.

High-rise developments are on the rise, with approximately $1.5 billion worth of residential projects in the pipeline aimed at bolstering downtown’s economy and livability.
