Ongoing construction impacting traffic in Downtown Orlando.
Construction delays have postponed lane closures on South Street in Downtown Orlando, now set to begin on May 5. The project will reduce South Street from three lanes to one westbound lane affecting traffic patterns significantly. The changes are part of the Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project, aimed at upgrading key infrastructure managed by the Orlando Utilities Commission. The lane reductions will last about five months, prompting commuters to seek alternative routes during this period.
Orlando – Construction delays due to ongoing improvements have pushed back planned lane closures on South Street in Downtown Orlando. The expected lane reductions will now commence on Monday, May 5, and will significantly alter traffic patterns for the duration of the project.
During the construction period, South Street will be reduced from three lanes to a single westbound lane. This reduction will affect traffic traveling along South Street from South Mills Avenue to just west of Summerlin Avenue. In conjunction with these changes, traffic on Summerlin Avenue will also be rerouted around the construction closure, specifically between East Anderson Street and Pine Street.
The lane closures are a critical component of the larger Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project. This project aims to enhance several vital infrastructure systems managed by the Orlando Utilities Commission, including upgrades to the drinking water system alongside improvements to Orlando’s sanitary sewer and stormwater systems. These updates are essential to ensure continued service quality and efficiency in Orlando’s infrastructure.
The impact of the lane reductions on South Street is projected to last approximately five months, with vehicles being re-accommodated back to three lanes after the completion of this phase. Drivers and commuters are being advised to expect delays and consider utilizing alternative routes to navigate around the area during the construction period.
This recent delay follows the prior completion and reopening of work at the intersection of Robinson Street and Summerlin Avenue, which was finalized on April 18. The comprehensive Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project is anticipated to take until Summer 2028 to reach completion, underscoring the scale and significance of these enhancements to Orlando’s infrastructure.
The necessity for these improvements stems from a growing demand for reliable utility services within the city and aims to circumvent potential issues stemming from outdated systems. Residents and frequent visitors to Downtown Orlando are encouraged to remain informed about ongoing construction timelines to ease potential inconvenience during this period of extensive upgrading.
As construction progresses, the city plans to provide further updates to keep the public informed about any changes to this schedule or additional impacts on traffic conditions in the area. This information can assist community members and travelers alike in planning their routes accordingly during the duration of the project.
