A courtroom setting representing a sexual abuse lawsuit

News Summary

A lawsuit has been filed against the Diocese of Orlando by Shawn Teuber, alleging sexual abuse by late priest Robert Hoeffner. The suit claims negligence by the diocese and seeks at least $25 million in damages. The abuse reportedly occurred during Teuber’s time at St. Joseph Catholic School, raising serious concerns about the church’s response to allegations of misconduct. This lawsuit highlights the growing accountability for institutions in handling sexual abuse cases.

Palm Bay, Florida – A significant lawsuit has been filed against the Diocese of Orlando, alleging sexual abuse by the late former priest Robert “Bob” Hoeffner. The legal action was initiated by Shawn Teuber, a New York resident, on May 30, 2025. Teuber is seeking at least $25 million in damages, accusing the diocese and affiliated St. Joseph Catholic Church and School in Palm Bay of negligence related to the alleged abuse he suffered as a child.

The allegations claim that Teuber was sexually abused by Hoeffner during his time as a seventh and eighth-grade student at St. Joseph Catholic School from 2012 to 2014. The lawsuit describes Hoeffner as a “prolific sex abuser of children, particularly young boys,” who served in the Orlando area before retiring in 2016. The abuse reportedly occurred at various locations, including school events, in Hoeffner’s vehicle, and at the priest’s home.

Teuber brought the abuse allegations to the attention of Palm Bay police following a tragic shooting on January 28, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of Hoeffner, his sister Sally Hoeffner, and Brandon Kapas’ grandfather, William Kapas. In a shocking sequence of events, 24-year-old Brandon Kapas was identified as the shooter, who subsequently died in a shootout with police.

During the police investigation, it was revealed that Hoeffner had a strangely close relationship with Kapas, involving finances and living arrangements. Teuber’s police statement detailed numerous incidents of molestation, further complicating the narrative of the case.

The lawsuit alleges that various individuals raised concerns about Hoeffner’s inappropriate behavior toward boys, but the complaints were reportedly disregarded by both the diocese and the administration at St. Joseph Catholic School. Teuber’s attorneys are now demanding that the diocese release Hoeffner’s internal files, seeking clarity on the possible cover-up of the priest’s activities and the official response to these allegations.

This lawsuit reflects a growing trend of increased accountability and scrutiny regarding the Catholic Church’s handling of sexual abuse cases. A spokesperson for the Diocese of Orlando stated they were unaware of any abuse allegations against Hoeffner during his ministry and emphasized their prayers for all affected individuals.

Teuber has shared that he continues to grapple with anxiety, sleep disturbances, and emotional trauma as a result of the alleged abuse. His motivations for bringing forth the lawsuit extend beyond personal reparation, aiming to raise awareness for other abuse survivors.

Furthermore, the lawsuit alludes to the possibility that Brandon Kapas may have been victimized by Hoeffner as well, though this theory is not definitively stated. The connection between historical allegations of abuse and the recent violent incident raises critical questions about systemic failures in protecting vulnerable children within religious institutions.

As this case unfolds, public protests and calls for accountability have intensified. Various sexual abuse advocacy groups are demanding transparency and justice for victims, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reform to prevent future tragedies related to abuse in religious settings.

The lawsuit filed by Teuber against the Diocese of Orlando represents a crucial juncture in confronting the complexities of historical abuse, accountability, and the protection of children in institutions where trust is paramount. With each new revelation, the dialogue surrounding the Catholic Church’s response to abuse allegations continues to evolve, emphasizing the necessity for vigilance and reform.
