Crane Collapse at New Cape Canaveral Hospital Construction Site in Florida Claims Two Lives

A tragic incident unfolded on June 4, 2025, when a giant crane collapsed at the construction site for the new Cape Canaveral Hospital in Merritt Island, Florida. The accident occurred around 2 p.m., resulting in the deaths of two workers who were later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the fatalities, although the identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The incident took place at the 200 block of Borman Drive, where emergency crews responded promptly to reports of the collapse. At the time, gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 mph were documented in the vicinity, raising concerns that the adverse weather conditions may have played a role in the crane’s failure. In addition to high winds, the area had experienced rain, further complicating construction efforts.

Health First, the organization managing the hospital project, referred to the event as a “serious weather-related incident.” No staff members from Health First were present on-site during the collapse. The construction site is currently secure and has been placed under investigation by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Incident Details and Responses

According to Gilbane Building Co., the contractor overseeing the construction, the two deceased individuals were trade contract workers, with one associated with Baker Concrete and the other from a different trade contractor. Following the incident, all work at the construction site has been suspended.

Health First has expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased workers, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. The hospital’s construction was anticipated to continue despite the unfortunate event, with construction on the $410 million facility having commenced in March 2024. The new Cape Canaveral Hospital is projected to open to the public in 2027.

About the New Cape Canaveral Hospital

The new hospital, designed to feature 268,000 square feet of medical facilities, will include 120 inpatient beds along with a variety of treatment rooms. Given its location near the coast, the structure is being built to withstand the force of a Category 4 hurricane, ensuring safety and resilience in adverse weather conditions.

Ongoing Investigation

An investigation is actively underway to determine the exact cause of the crane collapse. Authorities are examining whether the crane was operational at the time of the incident and are looking into all factors that may have contributed to the tragic event. As updates become available, further information regarding the victims and the ongoing investigations is expected to be released.
