Thunderstorm clouds with lightning over Central Florida landscape

News Summary

A Weather Alert Day has been declared for Central Florida due to an incoming storm system expected to bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and a risk of tornadoes. Rainfall is forecasted between 2-5 inches, with potential flooding risk in the area. Authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and prepared as conditions may worsen, particularly in flood-prone regions. Following this system, temperatures are expected to rise dramatically next week.

Orlando, Florida – A Weather Alert Day has been issued for Central Florida on Monday, May 11, 2025, as severe weather is expected to impact the region. The forecast predicts heavy rain and possibly severe storms that pose a risk for flooding and other hazardous conditions.

The storm system originating from the northern Gulf coast will contribute to the inclement weather, intensified by local seabreezes. Rainfall amounts are anticipated to range between 2-5 inches, significantly increasing the risk for short-term flooding, especially given the ground saturation from recent precipitation. Additionally, the National Weather Service has indicated a slight increase in the threat for tornadoes during this weather event.

Impact Weather has been declared for the overnight hours leading into Monday morning, with widespread rain expected to start early. Channel 9’s meteorologist has noted that while there will be morning rain, scattered storms are likely to develop in the afternoon as sea breezes collide, bringing the most intense weather. Although cooler temperatures over the weekend may help mitigate the severe weather threat, conditions remain concerning, particularly with strong winds.

The forecast also warns of gusty winds reaching up to 60 mph, quarter-sized hail, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning as the storm system moves through Central Florida. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Marion and Alachua counties, where gusty winds around 45 mph and small hail were anticipated. A ground stop was implemented at Orlando International Airport (MCO) due to ongoing thunderstorms, with expectations that the halt in operations would last until 7 p.m. today.

As Central Florida has experienced humid and gloomy weather over the weekend, accompanied by intermittent rain and storms, the elevated flooding risk continues to be a significant concern for residents and emergency services alike. Storm activity is expected to decrease by midnight on Sunday, though the lingering effects of the storms may be felt into Monday.

After this storm system has passed, a dramatic rise in temperatures is anticipated next week, possibly reaching highs in the mid to upper 90s. Weather enthusiasts and locals alike can expect a period of dry weather beginning on Wednesday and continuing through the remainder of the week.

In addition to the storms of Monday, the FOX 35 Storm Team has previously issued Impact Days due to predicted heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds, and hail during the Mother’s Day weekend. The entire Central Florida region remains under a minimal risk for severe weather as authorities monitor the situation.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially in flood-prone areas, as these storms move into the region. Preparedness is crucial to ensure the safety of families and communities throughout Central Florida as they navigate this severe weather threat.
