ORLANDO, Fla. — The breeze is not letting up in Orlando. Forecasters expect a windy Sunday and a blustery week ahead across Central Florida, with passing showers inland and dangerous surf along the Atlantic beaches.
The National Weather Service office in Melbourne calls for mostly sunny skies in Orlando on Sunday with a high near 82, a north-northeast wind of 15 to 20 mph and gusts as strong as 30 mph. There is a 30% chance of showers, mainly after 2 p.m., and the overnight low should settle around 70.
Monday looks much the same, with a high near 82 and gusts to 30 mph. By Tuesday and Wednesday, gusts could reach 35 mph even under mostly sunny skies, and Wednesday afternoon brings a chance of thunderstorms.
The pattern comes from a tight squeeze between high pressure parked over the eastern United States and lower pressure out over the Atlantic. That setup keeps pushing northeast winds onshore and sends quick bands of ocean showers across the coast, where rain chances run near 50%, compared with roughly 30% inland. Rain chances fall to about 20% early next week as drier air moves in.
The coast is where the weather turns hazardous. A High Surf Advisory runs through Monday, with large breaking waves, minor beach erosion near high tide and a high risk of rip currents that can be deadly. A Gale Warning covers offshore waters, where seas in the Gulf Stream could build to 10 to 15 feet, and a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for flood-prone spots near the beaches and the Intracoastal Waterway. Beachgoers are being told to stay out of the water.
There is no tropical threat for now. The National Hurricane Center expects no storms to form in the Gulf, the Caribbean or nearby Atlantic waters over the next seven days.
