DELAND, Fla. — A man walking across U.S. 92 in DeLand was struck by two vehicles in quick succession and killed before dawn Sunday where the highway meets North Kepler Road, Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported.
Troopers were called to the intersection, where U.S. 92 is also known as East International Speedway Boulevard, at about 5:25 a.m. The 32-year-old man was trying to cross U.S. 92 while the pedestrian signal showed him he should not walk, according to the patrol.
An 18-year-old woman driving a 2000 GMC Sierra had a green light as she came through the intersection. She tried to steer around the man but could not avoid him. The impact threw him into neighboring lanes, where a second driver, a 44-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas, struck him again, a sequence laid out in the patrol’s own crash report.
The man died at the scene. Neither driver was hurt, and both stayed at the intersection to talk with investigators. The patrol had not released the pedestrian’s name.
Troopers set up a roadblock that shut the eastbound side of U.S. 92 for hours on Sunday morning while the scene was worked, and drivers were warned to expect delays and look for other routes. The eastbound lanes were cleared by 1 p.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the exact sequence of events that led to the crash is still being investigated and that it plans to share more details once they are confirmed. The 18-year-old driver and the 44-year-old driver were the only other people involved.
