Orlando’s Young Golf Star Shows Grit and Determination

In the sunny city of Orlando, a remarkable story of resilience and passion is unfolding in the world of high school golf. Meet Jack Mokris, a sophomore at Bishop Moore High School who has quickly become a standout player on the golf course despite facing the challenges of Type 1 diabetes.

Remarkable Performances

Jack is not just any golfer; he holds the title of the top golfer for Bishop Moore, and his skills are gaining recognition far and wide. Recently, he took the crown at the Lakewood Ranch Invitational held on September 5-6, finishing with impressive rounds of 68 and 67. To add to his accomplishments, he secured third place at the Wolverines vs. the World tournament with matching scores of 69. Talk about a remarkable talent!

A Tough Diagnosis

Despite his shining performances, Jack’s journey hasn’t been easy. Back in March 2022, when he was in sixth grade, he was diagnosed with Type 1 juvenile diabetes. His parents, Patrick, a dentist, and JoAnn, a licensed nurse, began to notice signs that something was amiss—like Jack’s sudden weight loss and extreme thirst, which had him guzzling a staggering ten bottles of water daily. Recognizing these symptoms allowed the family to seek the necessary medical attention.

Managing Diabetes on the Course

Now, managing diabetes is a key part of Jack’s life. He proudly sports a sensor on his arm that helps monitor his blood sugar levels throughout his day-to-day activities, especially during golf practice and matches. Whenever he eats, he must inject insulin, which makes him carefully consider his diet. In fact, balancing the game of golf while managing his blood sugar feels like a game within a game for him.

A Supportive Team

One of the bright spots in Jack’s story is the strong camaraderie he has with his golf team. Coach Marvin Snyder highlights the team’s supportive environment, with clear communication surrounding Jack’s health needs. The team even has a dedicated golf cart to carry Jack’s special backpack, filled with necessary snacks and drinks to help him manage his diabetes on the fly.

The Road Ahead

Jack isn’t in this journey alone. He has a co-leader in his teammate Noah Manly, who has been a good friend for years. Furthermore, Jack was inspired to return to competitive golf before his freshman year, thanks to his older brother Packy Mokris, who graduated last year and is now playing for Rollins College.

Team Goals and Future Competitions

The Hornets golf team is composed of four sophomores and three juniors, and they’re looking to up their game this season. After finishing fourth in the Class 2A state tournament last year, the team is eager to improve their standings. Junior Cooper Welch logged a low round of 74, while junior Brody Collins scored 72 at the Wesley Chapel Wildcat invite, showcasing the team’s potential.

Looking Forward

As the excitement builds, the team is gearing up for the upcoming district tournament, which is scheduled to be held at Mount Dora Country Club on October 28. With Jack leading the way, the Bishop Moore Hornets are focused on achieving great things and continuing to support one another both on and off the course.

This inspiring journey highlights not just Jack’s talent on the golf course, but also the strength and resilience that athletes can exhibit when faced with life’s challenges. Keep an eye on this young golfer—he’s just getting started!
