News Summary

The University of Central Florida (UCF) has officially achieved ‘preeminent’ status, a recognition reserved for Florida’s top public universities. This significant milestone was announced by President Alexander Cartwright, highlighting UCF’s commitment to improving graduation rates and educational quality. The university’s four-year graduation rate now stands at 63.8%, surpassing the required threshold. Funding from this designation will be directed towards enhancing faculty salaries, expanding scholarships, and improving student experiences, despite challenges related to the current student-to-faculty ratio.

Orlando, Florida – The University of Central Florida (UCF) has officially achieved “preeminent” status, a designation aimed at elevating Florida’s top public universities. This significant announcement was made by President Alexander Cartwright during a recent meeting of the board of trustees on campus. The state’s preeminence program, initiated in 2013, rewards state universities that meet specific performance metrics with additional funding.

UCF has worked diligently towards attaining this preeminent status for several years. The state program assesses universities based on 13 distinct metrics, requiring institutions to meet at least 12 of them. UCF notably reached a milestone with a four-year graduation rate of 63.8%, surpassing the necessary threshold of 60%. This statistic reflects a remarkable improvement of nearly 14% over the past four years.

In light of this achievement, President Cartwright has indicated that any financial gains from the preeminence designation will primarily be allocated to increasing salaries for faculty and staff. Furthermore, UCF intends to invest these funds in expanded scholarships, developing purpose-driven spaces, and enhancing experiential learning opportunities for students.

Current Challenges and Goals

Despite this recognition, UCF grapples with challenges related to its student-to-faculty ratio, which is currently the highest in Florida at 28.3 students for every faculty member. This ratio results in many required courses featuring waitlists, which can hinder some students’ timely graduation. To combat these issues, Cartwright aims to lower the student-to-faculty ratio and continue efforts to recruit more faculty members.

Ryan Goodwin, UCF’s senior assistant vice president for strategic initiatives, emphasized that attaining preeminence will bolster the university’s reputation and enhance recruitment efforts. With UCF now included among other preeminent institutions such as the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of South Florida, and Florida International University, the expectation is for increased recognition both statewide and nationally.

Future Funding and Approvals

At this time, it remains unclear how much additional funding UCF will receive as a result of reaching preeminent status. This financial determination will be made during the 2026 legislative session. Current UCF students are optimistic about the potential benefits of this status. For instance, Emma Clemmer, a UCF senior, expressed that state funding would facilitate smaller class sizes, enhancing the overall educational experience.

UCF first earned the title of “emerging preeminent research university” in 2016 and has since followed a strategic five-year plan to achieve full preeminent status. The Florida Board of Governors is anticipated to approve UCF’s preeminent status during a meeting scheduled for June.

Community Efforts and Long-term Vision

The journey to achieving this prestigious milestone underscores a concerted community effort, involving faculty, students, and staff at UCF. Moving forward, the university not only aims to capitalize on its preeminent designation but is also committed to continuing the elevation of its academic standards and enhancing the educational landscape for current and future students.
