Orlando is set to celebrate its 150th anniversary with the unveiling of “The Changing Face of Orlando: A Sesquicentennial Celebration” exhibit, which will open on Wednesday, July 9, at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to explore the city’s rich history and its transformation over the years at this special event, hosted in the Terrace Gallery at City Hall.

This exhibit is presented by T.G. Lee Dairy, a company that is also marking a milestone this year, celebrating 100 years in business. The showcase features a compelling photographic series that pairs historical and modern images of various iconic locations around Orlando. Visitors will be able to witness a visual journey that depicts the city’s evolution through a blend of past and present imagery, effectively capturing the essence of its growth.

The exhibit will highlight notable aspects of all six of Orlando’s city districts, providing a comprehensive overview of the city’s development. A total of twelve historical photographs will be on display, each paired with modern recreations created by local artists. The featured artists include John Baker, Peterson Guerrier, Jim Hobart, Steven Madow, Walter Phuego, and Kayla Smith, each contributing their unique perspective and artistry to the project.

Among the displayed historic photos is a particularly noteworthy image of the Dr. Phillips “express” juice and fruit stand located along Highway 441, which serves as a snapshot of Orlando’s past. The historical photos have been sourced from the Orange County Regional History Center, further ensuring the accuracy and cultural relevance of the exhibit.

The opening reception will offer attendees an opportunity to enjoy refreshments and participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the mayor. In addition, guests will have the chance to meet the talented artists behind the work and gain insights into their creative processes and the inspiration behind their pieces.

The exhibit will be accessible to the public and will remain on display until August 31 at the Terrace Gallery in City Hall. This initiative is part of Orlando’s larger 150-year celebration, designed to engage residents and visitors alike in reflecting on the city’s rich history and the diversity of its community.

As Orlando marks this significant milestone, the exhibit stands as a tribute to the city’s ongoing transformation, inviting everyone to partake in the celebration and to appreciate the stories encapsulated within its landmarks and neighborhoods.
