News Summary

Former West Virginia University guard Erik Stevenson has signed with the Miami Heat’s summer league squad, marking a pivotal moment in his basketball career. This decision means he will not participate in The Basketball Tournament with Best Virginia this summer, disappointing fans and teammates. Stevenson previously had a standout season with the Mountaineers, leading the team in scoring and earning accolades. As Best Virginia prepares for the tournament, they will need to adjust their roster, while Stevenson aims for a roster spot with the Miami Heat.

Charleston, WV – Former West Virginia University (WVU) guard Erik Stevenson has signed a contract to join the Miami Heat’s summer league squad, marking a significant step in his professional basketball career. However, this decision also means he will no longer participate in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) with Best Virginia this summer, a disappointment for his fans and teammates.

In a statement shared on social media, John Flowers, a member of Best Virginia, expressed his congratulations to Stevenson on securing his opportunity with the Miami Heat. The team will host a regional tournament at the Charleston Coliseum from July 18 to July 22, and with Stevenson’s absence, they will need to adjust their roster ahead of the competition.

Stevenson’s rise in the basketball world has been marked by a diverse college career. He played for four different programs, starting at Wichita State before moving to Washington and then South Carolina. He concluded his college journey at WVU, where he had a standout season. In his lone year with the Mountaineers, Stevenson led the team in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game. His performance earned him a spot on the All-Big 12 third team and was instrumental in the Mountaineers’ return to the NCAA tournament.

Following his time at WVU, Stevenson gained further professional experience by playing in the NBA G-League for the Capital City Go-Go. Over the course of 30 games in that league, he averaged 14.7 points and 3.8 assists, showcasing his skills and solidifying his readiness for this new opportunity with the Miami Heat, where he will now vie for a roster spot.

The TBT, an annual summer basketball tournament featuring alumni teams from various schools, will include several other teams in the Charleston regional. Competing alongside Best Virginia will be Herd That, the Marshall University alumni team, as well as Court Street Kings, Sikh Warriors, DuBois Dream, Elite Nation, and The Nawf. The competition aims to bring together college alumni from across the state, promoting basketball and camaraderie among former players.

The roster for Best Virginia, even without Stevenson, will feature notable players such as G Kedrian Johnson and G James Reese V, among others. The tournament provides a platform for these players to showcase their talents and possibly attract attention from professional teams.

In addition to basketball, West Virginia University continues its recruitment efforts across various sports programs. Recently, the WVU football program extended a scholarship offer to 2027 defensive back Hayden Dixon. Dixon expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity and the potential of joining the Mountaineers in the future. This focus on recruiting talent signals WVU’s commitment to building competitive teams across all sports.

As the summer season unfolds, both Erik Stevenson and the Best Virginia team are set to make significant impacts in their respective avenues. With Stevenson pursuing his professional ambitions in the NBA Summer League and Best Virginia gearing up for the TBT, the future looks promising for these West Virginia athletes.
