News Summary

The Diocese of Orlando is currently embroiled in multiple lawsuits filed by men alleging sexual abuse as children by priests, including the late Robert Hoeffner. Reports detail troubling accusations of grooming and inappropriate conduct by Hoeffner dating back to the 1980s and highlight community concerns that were ignored. The diocese is investigating the allegations, which also include claims against former staff member George Zina. Damages requested in the lawsuits range from $10 million to $25 million, following a recent surge in abuse claims.

Orlando – The Diocese of Orlando is currently facing multiple lawsuits filed by several men who allege they were sexually abused as children by prominent priests. These claims come amidst growing concerns regarding the conduct of late priest Robert “Bob” Hoeffner, who has a troubling history of abuse allegations. The men, referred to as John Does 1, 2, and 3, assert they were groomed, isolated, and victimized by these clergy members, implying that individuals within the community and church were aware of the misconduct.

Two of the lawsuits specifically name Hoeffner, who has been previously linked to multiple abuse allegations. Notably, Hoeffner was killed in a shooting incident in January 2024 by Brandon Kapas, a former student who also took the life of his own grandfather and Hoeffner’s sister during the same incident. The abuse allegations against Hoeffner are said to have occurred primarily during the 2010s, although new claims reported have roots stretching back to the 1980s.

Victims describe Hoeffner as demonstrating inappropriate relationships with boys, often engaging in behaviors deemed questionable. Allegations include having inappropriate living arrangements with his victims and conducting spiritual therapy sessions with his sister that were sexually suggestive. Concerns regarding Hoeffner’s behavior were reportedly raised by community members, including a nun who cautioned him about his actions, asserting they did not align with the Diocese’s standards. In one notable incident, a mother warned Hoeffner to maintain distance from her son after he publicly kissed the boy on the lips.

Representatives from the Diocese stated that they are currently investigating the allegations against Hoeffner. They expressed a lack of prior knowledge about any abuse claims either during his tenure at the church or following his retirement in 2016. The third lawsuit filed is against George Zina, a former staff member in the Dr. Phillips area during the 2000s. The allegations claim Zina engaged in abusive behavior towards a victim across multiple church locations and within his vehicle.

Zina is alleged to have groomed the plaintiff, manipulating them by suggesting that a same-sex relationship between a priest and an altar server was acceptable in the eyes of God. It is critical to note that Zina is no longer working in Florida and was never an ordained priest within the Diocese of Orlando. All three lawsuits request damages ranging from $10 million to $25 million, highlighting the severity of the accusations and their potential financial repercussions.

The lawsuits were filed by the same legal team that initiated claims against Hoeffner earlier in May. The recent surge in allegations follows a press conference in which victims discussed their experiences, including Shawn Teuber, who has filed a separate lawsuit against Hoeffner. Teuber alleges he was subjected to abuse while attending St. Joseph Catholic School in Palm Bay between 2009 and 2014, claiming that grooming began when he was in seventh grade and the abuse occurred in various locations, including the school premises and Hoeffner’s residence.

Concerns about Hoeffner’s relationships with boys had reportedly been flagged by other students but were not addressed by school authorities. Teuber’s legal action contends that both the church and school exhibited negligence by failing to take appropriate actions despite being informed about the abuse. Following the tragic death of Hoeffner, police discovered handwritten notes in his home that related to child sexual abuse, further intensifying the scrutiny of his past actions.

Past reports also suggest that Hoeffner may have engaged in inappropriate conduct with additional children; however, no definitive claims have been corroborated as of now. The Diocese of Orlando has publicly stated that they were unaware of any prior allegations against Hoeffner and have expressed their prayers for all individuals involved in the unfolding situation.
