ORLANDO, Fla. — Dale Smith Jr. is in custody on a second-degree murder count in the long-unsolved disappearance of Michelle Parker, Orlando police said, after detectives widened the cold-case team and ran fresh digital analysis on phones, computers and vehicles gathered years earlier.

Parker vanished in 2011 after a custody handoff involving the twins she shared with Smith and never made it to her bartending job. Her vehicle turned up abandoned the next day on the west side of the city, and her phone later surfaced in a lake south of Orlando. Her body has not been recovered.

Police leaders said they rechecked statements that conflicted and pulled additional evidence with newer forensic tools, while holding back specifics to protect the case. Smith is in custody without bond.

A former Orlando police chief who oversaw the original search called the file one of the largest of his career and said early leads pointed at Smith long before charging standards could be met. Statewide prosecutors have also leaned on newer tech in a broader cold-case push.

The same day Parker went missing, a nationally televised courtroom episode showed the couple fighting over an engagement ring. Investigators say the timeline and later digital work now support the murder count.

A charge is only an accusation. Smith is presumed innocent unless a jury or judge finds otherwise. Detectives continue to ask the public for tips that could help locate remains and fill gaps in the 2011 timeline.

Family members waited nearly a decade and a half for an arrest. Police say the combination of old scene work and new computer forensics finally cleared the charging bar that blocked earlier attempts.
